Asante Kotoko have mutually agreed to part ways with forward Johnson Oppong Owusu, bringing an end to the 28-year-old’s spell with the Porcupine Warriors.
Oppong Owusu is one of several players expected to leave the club as part of a major squad overhaul following a disappointing 2025/26 Ghana Premier League campaign.
The forward joined Kotoko in July 2025 on a two-year contract, arriving with considerable experience from previous spells with Dreams FC, Portuguese side C.S. Marítimo, Czech club FC Zlín and Albanian outfit KF Kukësi.
At the time of his arrival, Oppong Owusu described the move to the Kumasi-based giants as a “dream move”, but his time at the club ultimately failed to develop as expected.
He made a promising start, scoring an early goal against Young Apostles, but struggled to establish himself as a regular member of the team.
Reports indicate that the forward found it difficult to secure consistent playing time and did not fully meet the club’s expectations in training and competitive matches.
His departure forms part of a broader restructuring exercise at Kotoko, with up to 10 players reportedly expected to leave as the club prepares for the 2026/27 season.
The Porcupine Warriors endured a difficult campaign last season, finishing eighth in the Ghana Premier League, a position that fell significantly below the club’s traditional standards and ambitions.
Oppong Owusu is now a free agent and will be looking for a new challenge as he seeks to revive his career.
With experience both in Ghana and abroad, the 28-year-old is expected to attract interest from clubs looking to strengthen their attacking options.
For Asante Kotoko, attention now turns to rebuilding the squad under head coach Eric Tinkler, with the club determined to return to the top end of Ghanaian football and mount a stronger challenge for the league title in the upcoming season. 🔴⚪⚽
