Doreen Nabwire is a Kenyan former international footballer and women’s-football development specialist who has become one of the most influential figures in the growth of women’s football in Kenya and across Africa. She is particularly known for becoming the first Kenyan woman to play professional football in Europe and later moving into football administration and development with FIFA.
Doreen Nabwire Omondi was born in 1987 in Nairobi, Kenya, and grew up in the Mathare area. She developed a passion for football while playing on the streets as a child. At a time when organised football opportunities for girls were very limited, she joined programmes run by the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA).
Her talent developed rapidly. She played in international youth competitions and made her Kenya senior national-team debut at the age of 15, an exceptional achievement for a young Kenyan female footballer at the time.
Professional playing career
Nabwire's breakthrough came through international street football. In 2006, she represented Kenya at the Street Football World Cup in Berlin, where her performances helped bring her to wider international attention.
In 2009, she moved to Germany and signed for Werder Bremen, becoming the first Kenyan woman to play professional football in Europe. She finished the season as the club's leading scorer. She later played in the Netherlands for FC Zwolle and subsequently returned to Germany to play for 1. FC Köln.
Her playing career was eventually cut short by injury. Rather than leaving football behind, she used her experience to move into coaching, administration and women's-football
After returning to Kenya, Nabwire worked as a coach and with organisations involved in youth and women's football. In 2016, she joined the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and became involved in the administration and development of women's football. She also served as team manager of the Kenyan women's national team, the Harambee Starlets.
Her work focused on developing women's leagues, grassroots football, competitions and opportunities for girls. She was also involved in the development of Kenya's women's-football strategy.
One of the major milestones associated with the development of the game during this period was Kenya's qualification for the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, the country's first appearance at a FIFA women's World Cup at that level. FIFA has specifically highlighted Nabwire's contribution to the development of women's football in Kenya.
Work with FIFA
Nabwire's influence eventually extended beyond Kenya. In 2019, she graduated from the FIFA-UEFA Women in Football Leadership Programme, which brought together women from FIFA member associations to develop leadership and management skills in football.
In 2021, she was appointed to a FIFA technical advisory group focused on the growth and advancement of women's football. More recently, she has worked as a FIFA women's-football development expert/consultant, helping support programmes designed to strengthen women's football.
Doreen Nabwire's story is significant because her career has followed the entire pathway of women's football: player → coach → administrator → international development expert.
She has helped demonstrate that women from disadvantaged backgrounds can progress to the highest levels of football leadership. Her journey from playing street football in Nairobi to playing professionally in Europe and later contributing to FIFA's women's-football development work makes her an important role model for young African girls who want careers in football.
In 2024, FIFA described her as an important figure in Kenyan women's football, particularly in connection with Kenya's historic U-17 World Cup qualification and first-ever victory at the tournament.
