Ghanaian youngster Gideon Otabil has completed a loan move to Portuguese giants FC Porto from Ghanaian third-tier club Maverick SC, with the deal including an option for a permanent transfer at the end of the 2026/27 season.
The 18-year-old forward will begin his Porto journey with the club’s Under-19 side as he looks to continue his development in Portugal.
Porto’s U-19 team has already begun its title defence with a home victory over CD Feirense, and Otabil will now work to establish himself within the squad and adapt to his new surroundings.
The agreement between Porto and Maverick SC gives the Portuguese giants the option to make the Ghanaian’s move permanent next year should he impress during his loan spell.
Otabil, who is left-footed, expressed his excitement after completing the transfer, describing the opportunity to join Porto as one of the biggest moments of his young career.
“Playing for FC Porto is one of the best opportunities one can have, so I’m very excited. It’s the perfect setting for my career,” Otabil said.
The teenager also acknowledged the challenge of adjusting to a new country and footballing environment but remains confident he can settle in quickly.
“Adapting is always difficult, but I hope to quickly form friendships with my teammates. The city and the food are fantastic here, so I think I’ll be able to adapt over time,” he added.
Otabil revealed that his ambition to play for major European clubs has been a driving force throughout his young career.
He featured in several youth tournaments in Ghana, where his performances helped him attract attention and earn opportunities with the national team.
“I participated in several tournaments to demonstrate my potential, always very focused on pursuing my dream of reaching big clubs, as is the case with FC Porto,” he explained.
Now at one of Portugal’s biggest clubs, Otabil is determined to repay the confidence placed in him by working hard and enjoying his football.
“FC Porto is a great club and being here is a privilege. I’m obliged to always give my best so that everything goes well. Every game counts, so I always want to give my best, work hard and have fun playing,” he said.
The young forward also called on Porto supporters to give him a warm welcome, revealing that he thrives in front of passionate crowds.
“I hope the fans welcome me warmly and are always with us. I love playing in stadiums with great atmospheres; it brings out some of the magic in my football,” he added.
Otabil’s move represents another promising pathway for young Ghanaian talent into European football. He will now look to make a strong impression at Porto’s youth level and earn a permanent contract when his loan spell concludes at the end of the season.
