Girona sporting director Quique Cárcel has highlighted Ghanaian defender Abdul Mumin’s pace, defensive ability and versatility as key reasons behind the club’s decision to sign him.
Mumin was officially presented by Girona on Monday after completing his move to the Spanish club, who are aiming to secure an immediate return to La Liga following their relegation.
Cárcel revealed that Girona were specifically searching for a defender with the physical qualities and speed to bring greater balance to their backline.
“We were looking for a fast defensive player profile, and we think he can help us a lot,” Cárcel said during Mumin’s presentation.
The Girona sporting director admitted that the club faced competition for the Ghanaian’s signature, with Mumin attracting interest from other clubs before ultimately opting to join Girona.
“Logically, it wasn't easy to bring him here because he could have had other offers, but in the end, he chose Girona, and we are very happy.”
Cárcel believes Mumin’s qualities will prove valuable as Girona launch their promotion campaign.
“He can provide that balance that the team will surely need,” he added.
The 27-year-old arrives with valuable experience of Spanish football, having previously represented Rayo Vallecano in La Liga.
Girona president Delfí Geli also welcomed the defender’s arrival and praised his experience, expressing confidence that Mumin can help the club become “consistent and competitive” in the Segunda División.
Mumin, meanwhile, has already expressed his readiness for the challenge ahead, insisting that he is both physically and mentally prepared to compete after being involved in Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Ghana international will now look to establish himself at Girona and play a key role in the club’s push for an immediate return to Spain’s top flight.
