Ghana international Inaki Williams says he is leaving the Black Stars with pride and peace of mind after giving his all to the national team throughout his four-year international career.
The Athletic Bilbao captain announced his decision to retire from international football on Friday morning, bringing an emotional end to his journey with Ghana.
Williams switched his international allegiance from Spain to Ghana in 2022, choosing to represent the country of his parents at senior level.
The 32-year-old went on to make 28 appearances for the Black Stars, scoring two goals after making his international debut in June 2022.
He was subsequently selected for Ghana’s squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he featured for the Black Stars.
Williams also represented Ghana at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire before being included in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Reflecting on his decision to bring his international career to a close, Williams said he leaves the Black Stars satisfied with his contribution and without regrets over his commitment to the national team.
“I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end. I leave happy, proud and with the peace of mind of knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt,” he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Williams’ decision brings the curtain down on a chapter that allowed him to reconnect with his Ghanaian heritage while representing the country at some of football’s biggest tournaments.
Although his time in the Black Stars shirt has come to an end, the Athletic Bilbao forward leaves with lasting memories of his international journey and the pride of having represented Ghana on the global stage.
Williams will now turn his full attention to club football, where he remains an influential figure and captain of Athletic Bilbao.
