Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has left the country and is travelling to England to finalise a move to a club in Sheffield, with his return to competitive football now close to completion.
The 34-year-old forward is expected to join either Sheffield United or Sheffield Wednesday, although his exact destination is yet to be confirmed. A decision is expected after Ayew arrives in England and completes the formalities of the transfer.
Ayew has been without a club since the World Cup and is now closing in on a return to action. He left Leicester City before the tournament following the club’s relegation from the Championship.
A proposed move to Blackburn Rovers has fallen through, while Southampton are also no longer an option for the experienced forward.
Ayew also held discussions with Cypriot club APOEL Nicosia, but the talks failed to progress significantly as the Ghana captain preferred to continue his career in one of Europe’s bigger leagues.
His decision to remain in England has now paved the way for a late move to one of the two Sheffield clubs.
The transfer is expected to be completed once Ayew arrives in England, undergoes the necessary procedures and signs the required documentation.
His club situation could also have an impact on his availability for Ghana’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia.
A decision on whether Ayew will join the Black Stars for the two fixtures is expected in the coming days and could depend partly on the position of his new club.
Ayew remains one of Ghana’s most experienced internationals, having earned 122 caps and scored 33 goals for the national team.
