Ghana midfielder Kwasi Sibo believes increased competition for places in the Black Stars will benefit the team as head coach Carlos Queiroz begins his tenure.
Sibo made the comments after seven players reported for Ghana’s opening training session at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday as preparations began for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Black Stars will open their Group C campaign against Côte d’Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké before returning to Accra to host The Gambia in their second qualifier.
Sibo believes having quality players competing for positions will raise standards within the squad and encourage every player to perform at their best.
The Black Stars are entering a new chapter under Queiroz following their participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Portuguese coach expected to make changes as he works to build his team.
Competition for places could therefore play an important role as players look to establish themselves under the new technical team.
“We need to be competitive every time in the team. If we have players who play in the same position, it is very good for everyone because we push ourselves to give our best for the nation,” Sibo said.
Ghana will, however, be without Mohammed Kudus for the opening clash against Côte d’Ivoire after the Tottenham Hotspur forward withdrew from the squad to continue his recovery from injury.
His absence has led to the late inclusion of Mohammed Fuseini, giving Queiroz another attacking option ahead of the crucial Group C encounter.
