President John Mahama has called for increased investment in women’s football, arguing that Ghana has achieved greater success in the women’s game despite receiving significantly less financial support than men’s football.
Mahama made the remarks when Ghana Premier League champions Medeama SC, MTN FA Cup holders Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies paid a courtesy call on him ahead of their respective continental campaigns.
The President stressed that Ghana’s women’s teams have delivered more trophies for the country and therefore deserve greater financial backing and institutional support.
“Indeed, we have done much better in women’s football than in men’s football. Our women have won more trophies for us than the men, and yet we put all the money into men’s football.”
Mahama also expressed concern over what he described as unequal treatment of Ampem Darkoa Ladies during the engagement, noting that the women’s club initially received less attention than the men’s teams.
“Even today, you can see the discrimination. Ampem Darkoa were here, and they were almost ignored until I intervened. Yet look at the presentation she made, very eloquent.”
The President called for deliberate steps to bridge the funding and support gap between men’s and women’s football.
He said affirmative action was necessary to ensure women’s teams receive the resources and backing required to compete successfully on the domestic and continental stages.
“In the spirit of affirmative action, we must deliberately support women’s football and help bring the women’s teams up.”
