Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has revealed that Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo could be deployed as a centre-forward during the 2026/27 season as the club looks to manage the workload of Erling Haaland.
City travel to Portugal to face FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, September 8, with Maresca acknowledging the need to carefully manage Haaland during what is expected to be a demanding campaign.
The Norwegian striker has featured in almost every minute of City’s football so far this season, prompting Maresca to stress the importance of giving him adequate rest when necessary.
“At the moment, he’s played every minute apart from the Community Shield. We need to protect Erling because the season is very long and he’s going to have games where he needs to recover,” Maresca said.
With City unable to bring in another recognised striker during the transfer window, Semenyo could provide a valuable alternative in the number nine position when Haaland needs to be rested or is unavailable.
Asked whether the Ghana international is capable of playing as a centre-forward, Maresca was clear about the possibility.
“Depends on the game and game plan. Antoine can play nine. It depends on the game.”
Semenyo has made three appearances for City this season, contributing two assists in his early outings.
His versatility and ability to operate across the attacking line could prove particularly valuable as Manchester City compete on multiple fronts throughout the campaign.
With a long season ahead, Semenyo’s willingness to adapt to different attacking roles could give Maresca an additional tactical option while allowing Haaland to be managed more carefully.
The Ghanaian forward will therefore be hoping to continue making an impact as he competes for regular minutes and potentially takes on a new role at the heart of City’s attack.
