Helsingborgs IF forward Osman Addo has received his first senior international call-up after being named in Somalia’s squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The 22-year-old winger, born in Denmark, recently joined Swedish Superettan side Helsingborgs IF on loan from Viborg FF and has now committed his international future to Somalia following a year-long pursuit by the Somali Football Federation.
Addo’s inclusion is part of head coach Yusuf Ali Nur’s efforts to strengthen the Ocean Stars with dual-nationality players competing in European leagues.
The versatile forward brings experience from Scandinavian football and is expected to add depth to Somalia’s attacking options as they prepare for a challenging Group C qualifying campaign.
Addo could make his senior international debut during Somalia’s upcoming double-header, beginning with an away clash against The Gambia on September 25, 2026.
The Ocean Stars will then face reigning African champions Côte d’Ivoire on September 29, with the fixture set to be played at a neutral venue.
The September international window represents an important step in Somalia’s ambition to qualify for the AFCON tournament for the first time in the country’s history.
Addo’s decision to represent Somalia also brings an end to months of speculation over his international future, with the winger eligible to represent Denmark by birth.
Although some early reports described him as Danish-Ghanaian because of his Danish birthplace and the Ghanaian-sounding surname “Addo”, his family background is Somali, with his father, Abdulkadir, being of Somali descent.
The upcoming qualifiers will therefore mark a new chapter in Addo’s career as he begins his journey with the Ocean Stars at senior international level.
