Burkina Faso Football Federation president Colonel-Major Oumarou Sawadogo has been appointed president of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B following the resignation of Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau.
Sawadogo takes over the leadership of the regional football body at a challenging period for Nigerian football, following Gusau's decision to step down amid growing concerns surrounding the country's national teams, including the Super Eagles and Super Falcons missing out on their respective World Cups.
Gusau assumed the WAFU Zone B presidency after Ghana Football Association president Kurt-Edwin Simeon Okraku was elected to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee at the continental body's congress in Egypt on March 12, 2025.
Following his election, Okraku relinquished the WAFU B presidency to focus on his new responsibilities as CAF's Second Vice-President. Gusau subsequently formally took over the regional position at the organisation's headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.
Sawadogo is no stranger to WAFU Zone B administration, having previously served as the organisation's Second Vice-President before his elevation to the top position.
The Burkinabè football administrator was elected president of the Burkina Faso Football Federation on August 31, 2024, succeeding Lazare Banssé.
His appointment is expected to provide stability and continuity within WAFU Zone B while further strengthening cooperation among the football associations in the region.
Sawadogo will oversee a zone comprising seven West African nations, with the development of regional competitions, youth football and stronger institutional collaboration expected to remain among his key priorities.
His tenure will also present an opportunity to build on existing initiatives and enhance the development of football across the WAFU B region.
