Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has defended his approach to football, insisting that the ultimate measure of any playing style is whether it produces victories.
The Portuguese coach has often been described as a defensive-minded manager, a label that has followed him throughout his coaching career.
During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ghana were at times seen defending deep, absorbing pressure and looking to exploit opponents on the counter-attack, an approach that attracted criticism from some sections of the Ghanaian football community.
The decision to bring Queiroz back for a second spell in charge of the Black Stars also generated debate, with questions raised about his tactical philosophy.
Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku previously defended the coach, pointing to Ghana’s long wait for major international success.
Speaking at his first press conference since his reappointment, Queiroz insisted that coaches are ultimately judged by results rather than by a particular style of play.
“I want you to understand one thing; my style of football is the winning style. Tell me one coach in the world that lost his job because of his style. I only know of coaches that lose their jobs because they don’t win.
“The winning makes the style. That’s the law of the game.”
Queiroz’s comments are likely to fuel further discussion among Ghana supporters, but his immediate focus is on delivering results as the Black Stars begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Ghana will travel to Bouaké on Thursday, September 24, to face Côte d’Ivoire in their opening Group C qualifier before hosting The Gambia in Accra on September 29.
The two fixtures represent an important start for the Black Stars as they seek to secure qualification for the 2027 AFCON after missing out on the previous edition in Morocco.
