New Ghana midfielder Ronald Donkor has expressed his excitement after receiving his first-ever call-up to the Black Stars ahead of the upcoming international assignments.
The New York Red Bulls midfielder has been included in head coach Carlos Queiroz’s squad as Ghana prepares to begin its 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia in their opening qualifiers before travelling to Morocco for an international friendly.
Reacting to his maiden senior national team invitation, Donkor described the call-up as the fulfilment of a long-standing dream.
“This has been my dream, to play for the national team. I’m really happy and grateful. When we start playing games, I know Ghanaians will see everything.”
The invitation marks an important milestone in Donkor’s developing career as he looks to make his mark on the international stage.
The midfielder also explained the story behind his nickname, ‘Agogo’, revealing that it was inspired by his admiration for former Ghana striker Junior Agogo.
“They used to call me Agogo back in the days. I mean, I love Agogo. I love him.”
Junior Agogo was a popular member of the Black Stars and played a key role during Ghana’s memorable run to the semi-finals of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.
Donkor will now hope to draw inspiration from his namesake as he begins his own journey with the senior national team.
The midfielder has also set his sights on achieving success with Ghana while making a positive impact both on and off the pitch.
“Win every single game, win trophies and give everything for my family and my country,” he added.
Donkor will now compete for a place in Queiroz’s starting line-up as the Black Stars intensify preparations for their crucial international fixtures.
