Somalia have requested permission to use Ghana’s Accra Sports Stadium as their home venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers after being left without a CAF-approved stadium.
The Somali Football Federation (SFF) has formally written to Ghana’s National Sports Authority (NSA) seeking approval to stage their home qualifying fixtures at the refurbished stadium.
The request follows the Accra Sports Stadium’s return to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) list of approved venues for international matches after undergoing extensive renovation works.
The Accra Sports Stadium is currently the only venue in Ghana approved to host CAF and FIFA-sanctioned international fixtures, making it an attractive alternative for countries whose home facilities do not meet the required standards.
Somalia, known as the Ocean Stars, have been drawn in Group C alongside Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire and Gambia as they battle for a place at the 2027 AFCON.
They are scheduled to begin their qualifying campaign away against Gambia on September 25, 2026, before hosting Côte d’Ivoire four days later.
If Ghana approves Somalia’s request, the Accra Sports Stadium could serve as the Ocean Stars’ temporary home for their qualifying campaign.
The development could also see the venue host matches involving two teams from the same qualifying group, with Ghana expected to use the stadium for their own home fixtures.
The top two teams from each qualifying group will qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
A decision from the Ghanaian authorities on Somalia’s request is expected to determine whether the Accra Sports Stadium will become the Ocean Stars’ temporary home during their pursuit of AFCON qualification.
