Ghana football legend Mohammed Polo has attributed the country's recent football struggles to technical shortcomings rather than administrative failures, urging greater investment in coaching development and the preservation of Ghana's unique football identity.
The former Hearts of Oak star acknowledged the efforts of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in implementing structures aimed at improving the game but believes the absence of consistent success indicates that a crucial element is still missing.
According to Polo, that missing ingredient is a stronger technical foundation focused on developing coaches, nurturing players, and restoring Ghana's traditional style of football.
"My five-year development plan is in place because the GFA management is doing a lot and putting every structure in place, but no results to show. It shows that there is something missing. What is missing is technical," Polo told Asempa Sports.
The 1982 Africa Cup of Nations winner stressed that Ghana has long been recognised for its technical ability, creativity, and attractive style of play, qualities he believes should be deliberately passed on to the next generation of footballers.
Polo also weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding local coaches, arguing that instead of questioning their abilities, greater emphasis should be placed on equipping them with the knowledge, resources, and support needed to develop players effectively.
"The conversations surrounding local-based coaches, they are doing their best. We have our own style of football, and we want to teach the children what we know. I believe that those who come through this system will help us," he added.
The former Black Stars winger believes experienced football legends and local experts have a vital role to play in coaching education and grassroots development, insisting their knowledge should be harnessed to help restore Ghana's football philosophy.
Polo remains convinced that prioritising technical education from the grassroots level will be key to producing a new generation of talented players capable of competing at the highest level and returning Ghanaian football to its former glory.
