English-Ghanaian defender Benjamin Arthur has joined Portsmouth on a season-long loan from Premier League side Brentford, with the move set to provide the young centre-back with valuable first-team experience in the Championship.
The 20-year-old completed his transfer to Fratton Park on Wednesday and will wear the number 2 shirt during the 2026/27 campaign.
Arthur arrives at Portsmouth with experience from both English and Scottish football. He spent the second half of the previous season on loan at Scottish giants Celtic, making six appearances and helping the club secure a domestic league and cup double.
Portsmouth manager John Mousinho welcomed the defender and believes his arrival will strengthen the club’s defensive options ahead of the new campaign.
“We’re thrilled to bring Benjamin here for the season to boost our defensive ranks,” Mousinho said.
“He possesses all the attributes you expect of a centre-back and is also more than comfortable with the ball at his feet.”
Arthur began his football development at Peterborough United before joining Brentford in 2023, initially becoming part of the club’s B-team setup.
He enjoyed an impressive 2024/25 season, earning the Brentford Under-21 Player of the Year award after playing a key role in the team’s Professional Development League triumph.
His performances subsequently earned him promotion to the Brentford first team, where he made his senior debut in a Carabao Cup victory over Aston Villa.
The defender went on to make three appearances for Brentford last season before securing his loan move to Celtic, where he gained further experience at senior level.
Arthur will now continue his development with Portsmouth, who are preparing for their third consecutive season in the Championship.
With his English youth international background and Ghanaian heritage, Arthur could also remain a player of interest to Ghana as he develops his senior career.
